Bank accounts for NRI/OCI

Can NRI have regular bank account?

As per the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) guidelines, an NRI cannot have a savings account in his or her name in India. You must convert all your savings (money earned abroad) to a Non-Resident External Account (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account.

Which account should NRI open?

NRIs who are earning income in the form of dividends, rental income, business income, etc. in Indian currency, must open NRO Account only. NRO account is subject to IT returns based on income.
NRE account can be credited with foreign currency only. Here, your money is converted into Indian Rupees at the time of deposit. NRE account does not have to file IT returns.
An NRI can open both NRO as well as NRE together.

Can NRI open bank account without PAN?

NRO accounts are meant for managing the income earned in India, while NRE accounts are for managing the income earned outside India. A PAN Card is not a mandatory document to open an NRO Current Account. However, a PAN Card will be required when you repatriate the money outside India.
